What is Success Coaching?Success Coaching is service that is vastly becoming a grand industry in the US, Europe and around the globe. Basically a Success Coach offers skills, tools and support to evaluate a clients situation as well as their projected or desired outcome. Then offer guidance on setting and achieving their goals.
Who uses a Success Coach?Today we live in a world that is focused on individualism. More and more situations are about personal achievement, even in environments that are a ‘part of a group’. There are few communities, and circumstances available that offer family/group support for every day needs.
Even in close families, many people have become so busy in their lives that instead of spending time encouraging and motivating one another, they use their together time to release frustrations about their day or perhaps just listen to someone else’s frustrations. This creates many live concerns; lack of motivation, low energy, depression, relationship problems, loneliness, just to name a few.
Some people have found a way to achieve the support and guidance they are lacking through a Success Coach. One of the largest markets for a Coach today is with Professionals seeking to improve their marketability, their organization & time management. While balancing their professional and personal lives.
There are numerous of Actors/Actresses, sports professionals, business leaders and more who use coaches as an every day part of life. Helping to keep them focused on their goals and path to achievement.
A Coaches goal is to guide a client to finding solutions that will work for them and their goals. They empower the client to think and do for themselves, while offering advice and suggestions about what they have seen work in the past but never telling a client what they should or should not do.
Who chooses to be a Success Coach and why? With Success Coaching becoming so popular today it is amazing to hear the stories behind how a Coach chose their field. Many coaches have worked in one area of focus for many years and realized they wanted to be their own boss so began to help others with the knowledge they gained from their experience. Others seem to come to the field with a natural instinct to help guide their clients to success. There are many areas of expertise a coach may focus a career on, while others are more general because they have a great ability to be more flexible.
Is Success Coaching for me?This of coarse is a personal decision based on your personal background and needs. Success Coaching can be a wonderful career for anyone interested in helping others help to develop a plan to achieve their person goals.
As with any new business, a Success Coach also has to be self motivated and either have the means to establish a business, or work in their current position until they can establish enough revenue threw their new business to become financially independent of their current position. Or in some situations a Success Coach and transition from one career to the next by incorporating their skills as a Success Coach with their background/experience in a way that allows them to do both in conjunction with one another.
A key element to becoming a great Success Coach is communication and rapport building. No matter what area of coaching you want to focus on if you can not gain rapport with your clients or they do not understand what you are trying to communicate to them, a coach will not get very far. Some people seem to be able to communicate with anyone, others are able to communicate better with only certain individuals, while others struggle to keep rapport with anyone. It is always the responsibility of the Coach to find a way to connect with whom ever they are working with. The more skills a Coach has the more individuals they will be successful with, establishing their business faster and gaining greater recognition in their field.
What are some types of Success Coaches? There are many areas of coaching an individual can focus on. But basically I would break them down into Four Main Categories; Life Coach, Business Coach, Health Coach. Of these there are many coaches who focus their practice on individual needs or personal interest.
Success Life Coach -
A Success Life Coach has a ‘general’ scope of practice. They are often very flexible and can help with guidance to your goals in many areas of life. Whether you want to organize your home, or life schedule or want to make new empowering choices, a life coach can be an amazing tool in helping to design a focused path to achieving your goals. A Success Life Coach can be a real asset for those looking to make changes in several areas of their life or life in general.
Below is a small example of some more focused areas of practice a Success Life Coach may choose:
Relationship Coach -
This may be an intimate relationship or any couple relationship, friend, parent, boss, business partner. A relationship Coach helps couples recognize areas of concern, helps them to find ways to reach compromises and work together to build their relationship in a direction both parties are comfortable with. A relationship Coach may also work with an individual in helping them recognize ways in which they may work on personal areas that will benefit their relationship even when the second party is unwilling or unavailable to be a part of the process. Relationship coaches may focus on one area of expertise as well such as pre-marital coaching, or boss employee relations.
Wedding coach -
This is not the ‘wedding planner’ (although some wedding planners are great coaches too). A wedding coach will help an individual sit down and design a plan for the wedding that is going to suit their goals and needs. This is a great way to be prepared for a wedding planner. If a client knows what their goals are before go into it, they feel more confident in the process and are more able to give input in direction without becoming overwhelmed or over budget.
Child Coach -
A child Coach may work with behavior, scholastic/educational, or emotional areas depending on their background and scope of expertise. Their main focus is on helping the child with personal achievement but generally will work with the parents and/or teachers as well to help provide the most successful environment in which the child can become successful. Most children are easier to work with than adults as they do not have as many ‘obstacles’ and ‘emotional barriers’ their way the years of behavior patterns have created in adults. However if a child does not have the supportive environment of the parents and possibly teachers a Coach will only accomplish so much as a child often becomes the product of their environment.
Spiritual Coach -
A spiritual coach is generally an adviser of a spiritual nature, helping a client focus on their spiritual growth or the spiritual connection of their goals. Although some may focus on a specific religious field many are more focused on the spiritual nature of their clients goals and not on their beliefs. It is important however to make sure the coach you consider for this area of guidance does share a general belief that you do. This ensures that there are no unforseen conflicts that may relate to beliefs.
Athletic Coach -
A Athletic Coach focuses on the world of sports and athletes. This can be anything from helping a school sporting coach set out a plan to help his students have a more successful outcome. To working with a professional athlete in helping him to improve the skills of his personal game while working in team consideration as well. An Athletic Coach may also help an individual in setting a workout plan that will help them achieve their personal goals of fitness.
Success Health Coach -
A health Coach is generally working under specific guidelines of expertise. There are many nurses, doctors, psychologists, nutritionist, herbalists, holistic practitioners and more who have a background in areas of health & nutrition. These individuals work with their specific background to help clients make choices that can help to enhance the clients health.
Medical Health Coach -
These individuals have background and experience in the Professional Medical industry. Health care provides such as pediatrician, nurse, psychologist, and more. Working in their scope of practice and using their experience and background they are able to help a client find ways to set out a plan that is more healthful in their lifestyle. A Medical Coach may help an individual find the right doctor or care giver for their needs, or help an individual explore different options available for a specific diagnosis.
Holistic Health Coach -
An alternative Health Coach may specialize in one or more areas of alternative/holistic health. They often offer complimentary services that can be added to most any health/lifestyle. Depending on a clients needs an Alternative Health Coach can offer suggestions and tools that help to support and maintain good health.
Success Business CoachA Success Business Coach focuses on any or all areas of business. From employee satisfaction, to customer care, to the bottom line. They may help an individual find a career path that is right for them or help corporations come to a fair agreement in a merger. Most Success Business Coaches find a smaller focus that is most suitable to their talents and experience.
Below is a small example of some more focused areas of practice a Success Business Coach may choose:
Career Path Coach -
A Career path coach can sit down with a client and see what their background, natural ability, skills, and personal interests. Then the Coach can evaluate these along with the current market and share ideas and ways to choose a path the client can feel empowered with. Taking into account the financial situation, market, personal needs etc. A Career Path Coach will also help to focus on making a choices like, what is more important monetary gain or career choice or if they can go hand in hand.
Small Business Coach -
A small Business Coach is a great asset for new businesses or businesses who really want to improve their overall outcome, perhaps even want to expand. They generally help a client evaluate their current situation, and their desired outcome, then set a plan in motion either in small sets or long term goals to achieve that outcome. Depending on their background and experience some will be able to give you information directly on areas of marketing, advertising, taxes, customer satisfaction, overhead, training and more, while others will be able to guide you to the resources to find that information.
Business/Corporate Coach -
Most Businesses or Corporations higher a coach for one main reason. They want guidance in improving their ‘bottom line’. However there may be many ways to achieve that within a business or corporation; from improving employee satisfaction, to improving customer service, to providing a better service or product, to cutting expenses. Depending on the size of the Business or Corporation a Coach may work alone or with a partner or partners to create the outcome. Generally a Business/Corporate Coach will evaluate the situation and needs of the client then present ways in which they intend to work with the client on achieving that outcome.
As you can see there are many ways a Success Coach can help guide a client to their goals. I have only shared a small list of the vast areas in which a Success Coach may be able to advise and guide an individual. This list is truly only limited to the imagination of the coach and clients they work with.
How can I become a Success Coach?Find an area that you feel you would like to focus on. Perhaps you have a history in a targeted field, or expertise in a specific area - that is a great place to start. Research your prospective clients: Decide who your clients would be. What areas do you think they may want help with? Perhaps you can even do a group study, where you ask prospective clients if they had a coach what would they like to focus on. Then take that information and play out some scenarios on how you might approach that situation.
Regardless of your field of expertise, it is important to be a good leader and communicator. If you don’t have the skills to relate to your clients - regardless of their background you won’t be able to offer them the tools they deserve. I recommend ALL coaches take a class/training in communication and rapport building as even those who are great at it can learn to broaden their client base, just by being able to relate to more individuals. I have found the skills taught in an NLP Practitioner Training offer the best resources that a Coach can find. Not only does it share many communication skills that are not often taught through other venues, but NLP can also offers tools and strategies that enhance any Coaches repertoire and diversity. Our training offers specific information on Coaching and how NLP can be incorporated in Coaching.
